The world of flower producing has seen many changes over the last few years,Covid had a big impact on flower growing and now the weather is impacting growing and the availability of stems worldwide.
Many growers ceased trading after the pandemic,some changing what they grow and erratic weather worldwide damaging crops,reducing the quality of stems meaning less stock available for us to buy as florists with this last year being particularly challenging.
Added into the mix is the effect of leaving the E.U. now meaning flowers have to have a passport and are subject to stringent checks when entering our country,resulting in flower deliveries being late adding to the pressure for wholesalers and florists alike.
However it is not all doom and gloom, as a creative you learn to think outside the box,visiting the flower market is always a good start,to see in the flesh what is available and flowers are now available to access 24 hours a day,how times have changed in 28 years of trading!
Locally grown flowers are also available and I buy from a lady close tome in season and weather permitting.Locallygrown flowers are a completely different product to commercially grown products but what they do give is a natural feel to arrangements are scented,no chemicals used in growing and no air miles.
Its a testing time on all platforms of growing whether that be food,crops or flowers but we are resilient and will adapt to whatever comes next.
